Slab, crawlspace or full basement
Three options, and most people pick the one their last house had. Here is what each actually does to the drawing.
A slab puts the house on the ground. No stairs down, no below-grade space, and the mechanical equipment has to live somewhere on the floor you are using. Anything running under the slab is committed before the concrete goes in, which means the plumbing layout has to be settled earlier than with any other choice.
A crawlspace lifts the floor and gives you access underneath. Services run in a reachable space, which matters more than people expect over thirty years of a building's life. It costs more than a slab and less than a basement, and it gives you no usable room.
